Silas Cochise Sr, passed away on Thursday June 6, 2013 in Albuquerque New Mexico. He was born November 29, 1935 and lived in Mescalero all of his life.
His passion in life was being a true cowboy, an honored Tribal Council Member and his work at Mescalero Rehabilitation Center. He was a very active member of the Mescalero Apache Language Program and his main focus was for the younger generation to hold on to the Apache language and culture.
He was a paratrooper in the United States Army Airborne Division and an active soldier during the Korean War.
The love he had for his people was always in his heart as he prayed for everyone and the well being of our way of life. He prayed for the Apache people to continue to be a strong people. He was a very spiritual man and was eager to share the gospel with anyone who chose to listen.
Survivors include his children, Tina Cochise family, Colleen Cochise family, Silas Cochise Jr. family, Travis Cochise daughters, Gina CochiseVia daughter Elaina, Milette Saenz family, Winston Cochise sons, Inez Cochise Jr family, Anna Klinekole family, Malachi Cochise family, Tazalynn Cochise and Winslow Cochise Rocha children.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Amelia Naiche, two brothers, Freeman Naiche and Samuel Cooper, two sisters, Ollie Chino and Virginia Cervantes, his wife of 30 years, Inez Cochise Sr., a daughter, Lana Naiche and three sons, Christopher Cochise, Forrest Cochise and Freeman Cochise.
Prayer service will be Monday, June 10, at 6:00 PM in the Mescalero Reformed Church with the funeral service on Tuesday, June 11, at 10:00 AM in the Mescalero Community Center. Burial will follow at the Mescalero Cemetery.
