Randy was born on August 9, 1953 in Roswell, NM to Melvin Boots Harvey and Carla Joann Hatcher Nelson and passed away on April 15, 2009 at his home in Carrizozo. He was raised in Ruidoso, where he attended school, and in Carrizozo.

Randy was preceded in death by his father, Melvin Boots Nelson and a nephew, Bryson Stevenson. He is survived by his mother, Carla Joann Nelson of Carrizozo, his brothers, Barry Nelson of Tularosa and Kim Nelson and wife Peggy of Ruidoso Downs, his sister, Dana Johnson and husband Don of Capitan, his nieces and nephews, Ricki, Presli and Michael Stevenson, Bridget, Boston and Sierra Nelson, Sky and Brooke Trueblood.
