Milford "Obie" O'Brien, a cherished soul whose laughter and warmth touched the hearts of many, passed away on September 14, 2024 just two days after celebrating his 94th birthday. Born on September 12, 1930, in Elmira, New York, Obie’s spirited nature was evident from a young age. He was very active in sports at Elmira High School, where he distinguished himself as a champion boxer and earned recognition as 3rd in the state of New York for track.
Soon after high school, Obie joined the Armed Forces, a decision that set him on a path of adventure and discovery. He traveled the world, with stints in Germany and France, where he met the love of his life in Paris. The tales he shared about their time together were often filled with warmth and laughter, reflecting the joy he carried in his heart throughout his life.
Obie was not just a man of the world; he was the embodiment of joy and enthusiasm. Known for his ever-present smile, he had an innate ability to connect with people, never meeting a stranger. He was a true people person, earning him countless friends along life’s journey. His love for life extended beyond mere words; he loved to dance, often losing himself in music, especially during his cherished Friday nights spent at Sacred Grounds listening to Dave Millsap play.
Adventure was integral to Obie’s spirit. He found solace in nature, frequently fishing and hiking the stunning landscapes around him. In a remarkable celebration of his 75th birthday, he and his devoted friends climbed Sierra Blanca Mountain, a testament to his love for both life and camaraderie.
Moreover, Obie dedicated more than 5,000 hours volunteering at the Hubbard Museum, where his kindness and commitment did not go unnoticed. His tireless efforts earned him a presidential award, solidifying his legacy as a bright light in his community.
Obie's life was truly amazing, as he often said. His passions, resilience, and zest for life created a tapestry of memories that will tastefully echo for generations. His departure leaves an indelible void, but his spirit will forever resonate in the hearts of all who knew him.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Dolores O'Brien; mother, Meriel Williams; grandmother, Jean Holtz; and his dear cats that he loved as children.
