Josephine Moore

Jeanne Moore, christened Josephine, daughter of Stephan and Mary Roman, immigrants from Czechoslovakia, passed from this earthly vale into the light of our Lord Jesus Christ on May 31st, 2013. Born April 10, 1914, she was one of fourteen children, raised on a farm in Pennsylvania. Born and raised Catholic, Jeanne was a staunch advocate of the Catholic Church and Jesus Christ. At the age of 16, she left the farm, moving to New York City, living with a sister, and gaining survival skills necessary for a young woman in The Great Depression era of New York.

Tiring of the city, she found work in the Catskill Mtns. of New York and in the state of Florida. While working in Virginia, she met and married Charles W. Murray in 1941, to whom she bore two children, Charles Jr. and Elizabeth, today known as Hoot Murray and Bonnie Coe. Charles was an officer in the army at the time of his transfer to Fort Bliss, TX, from where Jeanne would find the land of her destiny, Ruidoso. She and Charles bought the El Chapparal Motel in 1945, renaming it the Alpine Courts, which later was named Alpine Lodge. Charles army career separated them, eventually leading to a parting of the ways.

The two children and the Alpine Lodge were then her main focus, using the skills she had learned in New York to create a life and livelihood for the three of them until 1950, when she met and eventually married Bob Moore, to whom she bore two sons, Robert and Edward, today known as Robert and Joe. Active in the small community of Ruidoso, Bob and Jeanne were industrious and tireless, building a thriving business in the Alpine Lodge and Bob Moores Mobil Gas station.

In 1964, May 28, a tragic accident took the life of Bob, and Jeanne was left to raise her two sons and run the two businesses. As Ruidoso flourished, so did the Alpine Lodge, allowing Jeanne the opportunity to import from New York two nieces, Mady and Claire, and their mother Magdalene, all of whom still call the southwest home.

As Jeannes family grew and pursued their own lives, she became a world traveler, visiting Australia, Russia, China, the Holy Land, the Vatican and Europe on numerous trips, but she always said, There is no place like Ruidoso. As her years increased and her health declined, she limited her travels to the United States. She continued to run the Alpine Lodge until a week before her passing, being the owner and operator of the business for 68 years.

Jeanne is survived by children Hoot Murray, husband to Pam Bonnie Coe Robert Moore, husband to Lynda Joe Moore, significant to Carol. Grandchildren are Chris, Shane, Tina, Shawn, and Michele great grandchildren Kyle, Erin and Amythest sisters Magdalene and Agnes.

Rosary services will be held at St. Eleanors Catholic Church on Tuesday, 9:00 am, followed by funeral services at 9:30. Jeanne will then be laid to rest next to her late husband, Bob Moore, at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

The family has requested memorials to the Building Fund at St. Eleanors Catholic Church.
