Long-time Ruidoso resident James Lowe died at age 92 on Easter Sunday morning, March 23, 2008. He is survived by his wife and best friend of almost 69 years, Martha Archer Lowe of Ruidoso, his son and daughter-in-law, the Reverend Dr. Thomas Arrowsmith-Lowe and Dr. Janet Arrowsmith-Lowe of Ruidoso, and three grandchildren, Eliot Arrowsmith-Lowe, Victoria Arrowsmith-Lowe, both of Ruidoso, and Dylan Thomas Lowe of Dallas, as well as four nephews and five nieces.
Mr. Lowe was born on September 17, 1915 in Gunter, Texas. He earned a bachelors degree and a masters degree from the University of North Texas. He met his wife on her first day of college as she was registering for classes. Upon seeing her he told his friends that he was going to marry that girl. James and Martha were inseparable from that point on, except for his tour of military service. He served in that US Army Air Corps during World War II. Both prior to and after his military service he served as a public school superintendent at schools in Texas. He gave up the rigors of school administration in 1960 for teaching in middle school. He and Martha, also an educator, retired from teaching in 1979.
James and Martha began spending summers in Ruidoso in 1970, becoming permanent residents almost 30 years ago. Both James and Martha are fixtures at Ruidoso Downs. James proudly told his physician before he died that he had won his last bet on the horses at the Sports Theater in the Billy the Kid Casino. James was very active in community activities, including the Evening Lions Club and the Community United Methodist Church.
A memorial service is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 26th at Community United Methodist Church and a Committal Service will be held at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Mount in Ruidoso in whose columbarium his remains will be placed at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 28th. In lieu of flowers the family asks for contributions to be made to the Community United Methodist Church Warehouse Fund.
