Glenneth Jan Shafer, age 76, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on August 31, 2024. Glenneth was a cherished resident of Capitan, New Mexico.
Glenneth was born on November 24, 1947, in Carrizozo, New Mexico, to John W. and Nettie LaMay. She attended school in Carrizozo and Capitan, New Mexico.
Glenneth married Joe D. Shafer on April 16, 1964, at the Parsons Hotel, in Bonito, New Mexico.
Cooking was Glenneth's passion. She prepared lunches at the Capitan Schools for several years before successfully running Capitan's Smokey Bear Cafe and Mom's Kitchen. She was best known for her elaborate Mexican dinners that brought family and friends together at Christmas, and her infamous jellies and jams.
She was an active member of the Mountain View Church of Christ and the Red Hat Society.
Glenneth is survived by her loving husband, Joe D. Shafer; her son, Donny Shafer (Sara); and her daughter, Tammy Auburg (Brian); Joe Shafer and wife Melodie and their children and grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Evelyn Petree; brothers, Kenneth LaMay and John E. LaMay; her grandchildren, Cody Candelaria (Frenz), and Andrew Candelaria; and great-grandchildren, Haley, Gabriel, and Coraline.
Glenneth was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers Leroy J. LaMay and William Dale LaMay.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, November 23, 2024, at the Mountain View Church of Christ, 103 Fort Stanton Rd, Alto, NM.
