Emma Hall

Emma Gene Hall, affectionately known as Sweetie by friends and family, passed away in the midst of family in Houston, Texas on April 24, 2012, she was 87.

Sweetie was born in Slaton, Texas on the 15th of March 1925. After graduating with a Bachelors Degree in Home Economics Education with a Minor in Music from Texas Tech University, she demonstrated her independent spirit, self confidence and courage by moving to Capitan, New Mexico, sight unseen without knowing a single soul, to take a job as a Home Economics teacher. Later in life, she pursued a Masters Degree in English and Library Science from Eastern New Mexico to become an English teacher. She also managed the family drug store in Capitan and worked as a Librarian at the school library.

It was in Capitan where she met her husband, Fletcher Hall. She said of the first moment that she saw him, I liked what I saw and it was love at first sight. They were married in 1946, and settled down in Capitan to raise three children together. Her 61 year marriage to Fletcher will forever serve as a model for the perfect marriage and a lesson in loving with all of your heart.

Sweetie was a devout Christian. When someone would offer to pray for her she would say, Thats okay. I have a direct line, not that she did not appreciate the prayers of others. She loved all sports and you could bet that if her TV was on, it would be tuned to a game of some sort or Jeopardy. Reading was another one of her passions. Her skill in playing the piano was masterful. She was also a talented painter who was fondly known for painting a Christmas scene in the large window of her house during the holiday season.

Her perspective on life, strength, brilliance, wit, independence, courage, love, work ethic and drive profoundly touched all those who knew her. She had the ability to do anything she wanted to do and never worried that she would make a mistake. When putting up wall paper for the first time, her daughter Pam asked her, Have you ever done that before Sweeties response was, No, but I can hang it. The example that she set for her children and grandchildren in having courage and taking life as it comes without fear or regret is one of her greatest legacies.

Sweetie was predeceased by her husband, Fletcher Hall, her brother Edward Tonn and her sister Mary Francis Denton. She is survived by her three children, Pam Allen of Capitan, New Mexico, Zana Segovia and her husband Don of Merkel, Texas and Fletcher Hall, III and his wife Paula of Abilene, Texas, as well as her five grandchildren, Melisa Daubert of Canyon, Texas, Trey Allen and his wife, Megan of Las Cruces, New Mexico, Corley Fichera and her husband Joe of Houston, Texas, Alaina Segovia of Houston, Texas and Fletcher Hall and his wife Laci of Lubbock, Texas. She also had 5 greatgrandchildren, Micaylie Daubert, Audrey and Reid Fichera and Bryant and Brayden Hall.

Friends are cordially invited to visit with the family at her home in Capitan on the 3rd and 4th of May. The funeral service is to be conducted on Saturday, May 5, 2012 at 11:30 AM in The Capitan Church of Christ.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Christian Childrens Home in Portales, NM, or to the charity of ones choice in tribute to the selflessness that she embodied throughout her life.
