Darryl Tim Collins, passed away at the age of 67 on Friday, February 15, 2008 in Salt Lake City, Utah with his wife and two sons by his side. Tim was born in Greeley, Colorado and attended CSU where he obtained a degree in Civil Engineering. He helped design airfields in Vietnam and soon after, working as a surveyor for the Forest Service, started his own land surveying business in Alamogordo in 1971. He moved to Ruidoso in 1979 when the area began to flourish and was one of the most influential surveyors both in the State of New Mexico and in Lincoln County. He served as the New Mexico Professional Surveyors Treasurer for ten years and was an expert at sub
ision development, laying out and designing a majority of the sub
isions within Ruidoso, Alto and Lincoln County.
Tim collected antique tractors and memorabilia and was a fanatical NASCAR fan. He took up dirt track racing in his 60s and raced as 77 in the Street Stock Class at the Sertoma Speedway outside of Tularosa. He enjoyed sipping on margaritas in Puerto Penasco, Mexico and boating at Elephant Butte. Tim loved his work and spent countless hours running his business, D.T. Collins and Associates, PC where he was actively mentoring his son Eric toward acquisition of the business. He was an old-school surveyor, who could remember the history of the land, who owned it, knowing how and why the boundaries where created and would astound all by the sheer amount of knowledge that he packed in his head. He was known to many as a straight-shooter whose recommendations you could rely on and trust. To his family, he was an unselfish husband, father and grandfather, who worked hard to provide for others and had a soft heart that would bring smiles and laughter to all those he touched.
He is preceded in death by his father, Harold Edwin Collins and his mother, Edna Dell McGee. He is survived by his wife, Christena Jennings, brother Doug Collins, son Gary Collins, son Eric Collins and his wife Anessa, grandchildren Gavin Timothy Collins, Richard Jennings Jr, Lindsey Jennings, Lauren Jennings, daughters-in-law Allison Jennings and Katharine Jennings, brother-in-law Richard Jennings Sr., numerous nieces and nephews as well as his former wife, Geraldine Collins.
A visitation and an open reception will be held from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Thursday, February 21, 2008. A memorial service at 1:00 PM will follow. Childcare will be provided from 9 a.m.-2:00 p.m. All services are being held at the First Baptist Church of Ruidoso at 270 Country Club Drive across from Cree Meadows Country Club.
