Catherine Woods Waldrop
Mrs. Catherine Waldrop joined her husband and friends with her Savior, Jesus Christ, on November 11, 2010. She was surrounded by her family as she departed this world.
Catherine was born in Ardmore, Oklahoma on August 23, 1915 to Nathan Jefferson and Jewel Thomas Woods She completed her high school education in Ardmore and began training as a nurse. It was during this time that she met her future husband, Barney Lawrence Waldrop. They were married on July 6, 1934. They lived in Oklahoma until World War II, when Barney was called to active duty. After the war, Barney and Catherine moved to Roswell, New Mexico and began to work and save to start their own furniture business. Their dreams were realized in 1952 when they opened the first MillerWaldrop furniture store in Lovington, NM. Their business grew and expanded to other cities, most notably, Hobbs and Roswell.
After their retirement, Barney and Catherine moved to Ruidoso, a place they had always loved. They were instrumental in beginning the Golden Age club in Ruidoso in the early 1970s. Traveling was an important part of their retirement plans, and they traveled extensively as long as they were able. Catherines favorite destination was always Hawaii.
Barney and Catherine were personable, caring people who made friends wherever they went. They were always involved in various ministries of the church. Catherine loved little children and taught Sunday school to nursery age children for many years. They were members of the First Baptist Church of Ruidoso.
Catherine is predeceased by her parents, brother, sister, and husband. She is survived by her four children and their spouses: Bill and Eileen Waldrop of Hobbs, Wanda and Mike McCormick of Las Cruces, Jeanne and Chuck Sears of Denton, Texas, and Mark and Mary Waldrop of Ruidoso. She is also survived by her sister, Joyce Benson, 19 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and numerous friends.
Catherine leaves behind a legacy of love. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She will be greatly missed. Memorials may be sent to Meals on Wheels, co Ruidoso Senior Center, 393 Highway 70 East, Ruidoso Downs, NM 88346.
Visitation will be Sunday, November 14, at LaGrone Funeral Chapel from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM with the funeral service on Monday, November 15, at 2:00 PM in the First Baptist Church of Ruidoso with burial to follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
