Lifelong horsewoman and animal advocate Barbara Joyce Hinton Schaible died Tuesday, July 21, at her home in Lincoln, New Mexico. Predeceased by her parents Elizabeth MacLeroy and Drury Hinton, MD, former Director of Surgery at Delaware Memorial Hospital in Philadelphia, and Medical Department Chair of Penn. State University, Joy was also predeceased by a son Drury Leisenring.
She is survived by her son Ronald Craig Leisenring, of Florida; granddaughter, Jessica Snyder and her husband Chris, her grandsons, Dylan, Tyler, and Nicholas all of New Jersey. Joy leaves behind extended family members, friends, and numerous animals including her beloved bulldog Jasmine.
After retirement from Magee Rehab Hospital in Philadelphia, Joy volunteered on the Navajo Reservation near Shiprock, Arizona, where her interest in Native Americans and the West was nurtured. She also had great fondness and a passion for all subjects spiritual and historical.
Settling in Lincoln 14 years ago, Joy was most proud of winning Best Female Rider Blue Ribbon at the 2003 Old Lincoln Days Parade. One of her gregarious Grey African Parrots would ask visitors, "Where's Billy?" and then mimic the guest's laugh.
The community will miss Joy's fierce and fearless humor.
Memorials in her name may be made to Friends of Historic Lincoln, Box 83, Lincoln, NM 88338, a group dedicated to the continued preservation and historical interpretation of Lincoln "La Placita del Rio Bonito."
The legacy of Joy's independent spirit, passion for adventure along with her love of life and the Wild West will live on through all who knew her. Her favorite maxim was "Life should not be a journey to the grave arriving safely in an attractive, well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, champagne in one hand, strawberries in the other screaming "WOO HOO What a ride!"
