Ammel Bevill

May 21, 1922 — May 17, 2012

Graveside service for Ammel Peachie Marietta Bevill of Nogal, NM will be Tuesday, May 22, at 10:30 AM at the Nogal Cemetery at Nogal, NM. She died May 17, 2012 at the Good Samaritan Society of Socorro, NM just four days short of her 90th birthday.

Ammel was born May 21, 1922 in Lone Wolf, OK to Ammel and Scott Miller, who was section foreman for the railroad. Later she and her family moved to a farm given to them by Grandpa Barnes, just west of Berlin, OK where they lived through the Black Sunday of the Dust Bowl. Forced from their farm by the drought and depression, the Millers moved to Arkansas where teenaged Peachie met Earl Bevill, the handsome CCC guy who stole her heart.

Won by many love letters, Ammel left Arkansas at age 17 and traveled by bus alone to join Earl in marriage in Las Cruces, on August 21, 1939, Earl worked for Dean Stahman as did Ammel. Their son and first daughter were born on Stahmans Farms in the Mesilla Valley. When World War II came along, Earl moved the family to work on the Circle Cross RanchTimberon area which Stahman purchased. There Earl was a cowboy, and Ammel being the only farm girl had to milk the cow. They were living at the ranch when the atomic bomb was blasted, Ammel remembering windows shaking and a bright light to the north. After the War, the family finally returned to live at Stahman Farms Pecan Orchard in the Mesilla Valley, where the last three girls were born.

Along with being a homemaker and raising five children, including one who contracted polio at age two, Ammel knocked on doors for the March of Dimes, was active in the Anthony and University Churches of Christ, was a 4H Club Leader, and was a active member of the Santo Tomas Extension Club.

Upon Earls retirement from Stahmans Farms in 1973, he and Ammel moved to Nogal Canyon in Lincoln County. Both soon became very active in the Carrizozo Church of Christ where Ammel was a Sunday School teacher and a member until the church closed. Ammel also helped revive the Extension Club in Carrizozo of which she was a member and officer.

She was a wonderful and loving Christian wife and mother. She was famous for her fabulous dinner rolls and her loving care for her grandchildren. She will be so dearly missed. Earl preceded her in death on February 25, 1993.
